RAID System
Is it ok to use RAID 5 on everything like data, log, etc
when using a SAN shared storage. In certain cases it may make sense to use other
configuration or use different raid levels for tempdb
(raid 0), log (raid 1+0), databases (raid 5) etc. Here you
have to be sure that you will be getting excellent
cooperation from the network/hardare support departments,
or if you are responsible for SAN and sql server.
Generally I would say it is ok to use raid 5 for
everything, because thats what I decided to use when we
configured SAN for sql server.

RAID 5 for logs is usually a bad idea because the parity calculation
requires additional overhead to read bits (disk i/o), parity calculation
(cpu, hba etc) & then the parity writes (more disk i/o).
Generally speaking, logs are far better off on a mirror, perhaps striped as
well, but not raid 5.

RAID FOR SQL
installed servers
with SQL but without RAID systems. I want to know wich is the best
configuration and how many disks
to install RAID on a server wich only has to run SQL server. The RAID, must
be only for data or for
data and the operating system at time?. Thanks a lot.

|||JP,
The best practice I've heard and use myself is a separate volume for each of
the following:
RAID 1 volume for OS and executables
RAID 10 if possible (RAID 5 if not) for SQL Server data files
RAID 10 or at least RAID 1 for log files
RAID 10 or RAID 1 for tempdb
RAID 5 for backups
This is in general; sometimes variations are required depending on
requirements. Some SAN vendors claim their RAID 5 flavors are just as fast
as RAID 1, but I can't verify that.
Hope this helps,

Quick sysobjects Question
How do I distinguish user objects from system objects in the sysobjects
table (other than user tables and system tables)?
Thank you,
Daniel Jameson
SQL Server DBA
Children's Oncology Group

WHERE OBJECTPROPERTY(id, 'IsMsShipped') = 0
However, there are some gotchas, such as sysdiagrams, dtproperties, and
maybe some replication objects...

quick count of all tables in a database
What about this:
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM sys.tables WHERE is_ms_shipped=0
One problem is that "sysdiagrams" is not marked as is_ms_shipped=1. If you don't want to include it, add name <>'sysdiagrams' condition.

Questions to the Microsoft guys about the custom assembly
Hi Guys,
I created a custom assemy and added a reference to it in my report, but when I built the report, it told me that the system could not find the file. I followed the steps in the MSDN when I did the above steps. Can anybody tell me why?
Another question is about the location of the assmbly that I should copy. In the Debugging Custom Assemblie chapter on MSDN, it tells to copy my assembly to
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE.
But in Deploying a Custom Assembly chapter, it tells me to copy it to
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies.
Can Microsoft guys tell me which is correct?
Thanks in advance.
Danny
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies is the correct location for the report designer in BI Development Studio.

|||Hi Robert,
Thank you very much for your answer. My another question is I can only refer to my custom assembly when I use strong name for the assembly and put it into GAC. Or else, the report designer just told me that the file or its dependecies counld not be found. But put the assembly into the GAC means I cannot debug my assembly. Could you give me some tips on this? (I followed all the steps I could find on the MSDN)
Thanks in advance.
Danny
